I brought my DSLR to Berkeley, so I’ve decided to take some photos every day in hopes my photography and camera handling will improve.

"When a gentleman makes his way down a row in a crowded theatre, he faces the people who are already in their seats. A gentleman never forces others to stare at his backside."

John Bridges

this is also how you make your way down a row in crowded lecture halls like DWINELLE and PIMENTEL

So I’m taking this civil engineering seminar which is a series of guest lecturers that talk about their work in the field, and today we had a speaker who was involved in the Hoover dam bypass project. This was a photo I found online of the bridge during construction. The arch span is the longest in the Western hemisphere.
Can you imagine being a construction worker building this thing? I’d be scared shitless. No, I’d shit my pants. Standing a few hundred meters above ground, where winds can pick up to 100 mph. And how mind-blowing is it that engineers planned this down to the last nut and bolt, and got both ends to match up so precisely? This 323 m bridge ended up fitting 3/8ths of an inch to plan.
Construction workers are amazing
Engineers are amazing
and anyone who says math is useless should just jump off this bridge.

Q: What do squirrels and Mission graduates have in common?

A: You can’t go a day at Berkeley without seeing at least one of each.
